About

VIRGINIA TECH

Virginia Tech is located in Blacksburg, Virginia, 40 miles west of Roanoke in the New River Valley of the Appalachian Mountains. Hiking, fishing, caving, camping, and mountain biking are all nearby. Virginia Tech offers 215 undergraduate and graduate degree programs to more than 30,000 students. Blacksburg is a college town that is comprised of great restaurants and home to one of the best college communities in the nation.

THE PLAYERS

The majority of our roster is composed of players from the Washington-Baltimore-Northern Virginia metropolitan area, however, players from all over the country have found themselves on the Hokies roster and continue to represent the rich tradition of Virginia Tech lacrosse.

The team’s atmosphere fosters friendships that last a lifetime. Being a part of the Virginia Tech lacrosse community provides each of our players with a greater sense of respect for both the sport of lacrosse and the university in which they are enrolled. Our players continually strive to embody the charge of Virginia Tech’s motto “Ut Prosim” (That I May Serve).

THE COMPETITION

Virginia Tech men’s lacrosse is a member of the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA – formerly USLIA and USL-MDIA). Within in the MCLA are two divisions, nine conferences and roughly 200 teams. With teams such as Boston College, Florida State, Texas, Colorado State, and Arizona State in the league, the MCLA is an extremely competitive national organization. The Hokies compete in Division I of the Atlantic Lacrosse Conference and did compete in the SELC until 2021 season. VT has won SELC championships in 2005, 2012, 2014, 2015, and 2018. The team also advanced to the Quarterfinals in 2014, 2017, 2018 and to the Semifinals in 2015 of the MCLA National Tournament.

COSTS

The players pay individual dues that cover their own costs for travel and equipment. Dues generally include lodging, travel, airfare, and equipment for a 15-20 game national schedule. Costs vary from year to year, but a player can expect to pay approximately $2,500 throughout the entirety of a school year, including fall and spring. We hope that parents and players do not see dues as anything more than an extension of the university experience and part of the cost of Virginia Tech education.

PROGRAM HISTORY

Founded in 1948, Virginia Tech fielded its first men’s lacrosse team. The NCAA recognized lacrosse as a varsity sport in 1970, and while a handful of teams acquired varsity status, Virginia Tech remained a non-scholarship program. From 1972 to 1994, the Hokies played a varsity schedule within the Deep South Lacrosse League. In 1995, due to NCAA regulations, the Deep South dropped Tech from its membership and the Hokies began to play a full club schedule. In 2000, Virginia Tech joined the SELC and has remained one of the leagues top competitors winning SELC titles in 2005, 2012, 2014, 2015, and 2018.  In 2021 Virginia Tech joined the Atlantic Lacrosse Conference, a new conference formed from teams in the SELC north.
