Virginia Tech Division II Men’s Lacrosse Opens Season with Chip on Its Shoulder
Blacksburg, Va. — Practice officially opened this week for Virginia Tech Division II Men's Lacrosse, launching a new season fueled by unfinished business, belief, and pride in the program’s identity.
The Hokies enter the year fresh off an Atlantic Lacrosse Conference Runner-Up finish, a campaign that showcased growth, resilience, and the ability to compete with the league’s best. Despite that success, Virginia Tech was notably left out of the Division II preseason rankings — a reality that has not gone unnoticed inside the locker room.
“This group doesn’t need external validation,” said Co-Head Coach Patrick Droney. “They’ve earned respect the hard way before, and they’re prepared to do it again.”
Opening day set the tone for a season built on accountability and edge. The Hokies return a battle-tested core that understands the demands of a long season and the standard required to contend in the ALC. With a challenging schedule ahead, the emphasis early has been on habits — competing every rep, valuing preparation, and trusting the process.
While motivation is high, tradition remains central. The Division II program continues to uphold the same values that define Virginia Tech lacrosse at every level: toughness, discipline, and pride in representing the university. Players are reminded daily that progress is not accidental — it is earned through consistency and commitment.
“We respect what this program has built,” added Co-Head Coach Piers McGinn. “Last year showed what’s possible. This year is about taking the next step.”
Unranked but undeterred, Virginia Tech Division II opens the season focused on substance over noise. Practice is just the beginning, but the mindset is clear — compete relentlessly, honor the jersey, and let the results speak.
