Virginia Tech Division I Set for Friday Night Showdown with South Carolina

BLACKSBURG, Va. — The Virginia Tech Men's Lacrosse Division I team will host the South Carolina Gamecocks Men's Lacrosse on Friday at 6:00 p.m. at the Marching Virginians facility in what promises to be one of the most anticipated matchups of the early season.

The meeting renews a competitive rivalry that produced an overtime thriller in their last contest. In that matchup, Virginia Tech forced extra time behind a clutch, late-game equalizer from Calum Wayer, highlighting the intensity and balance between the two programs. The Hokies ultimately got the win setting the stage for Friday night.

South Carolina enters Friday’s game with significant momentum. The Gamecocks have already secured impressive victories over Georgia Tech Men's Lacrosse and Tennessee Volunteers Men's Lacrosse, both of whom were highly ranked in the preseason. Those wins underscore the depth, discipline, and offensive firepower of the South Carolina roster.

Virginia Tech looks to counter with a balanced approach built on possession control, defensive communication, and offensive efficiency. Preparation and execution will be central themes heading into Friday night.

Head Coach Panchito Ojeda emphasized the importance of discipline and team identity in the matchup.

“We will need to play with great CULTURE and attention to detail to beat this very talented squad,” Ojeda said. “Every possession matters in a game like this. When we communicate, share the ball, and compete for one another, we give ourselves the best opportunity to succeed.”

Friday’s contest represents a key early-season test for both programs and carries potential postseason implications as conference play approaches.

Faceoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at the Marching Virginians facility. For more information and updates, follow Virginia Tech Men’s Lacrosse on social media.
