Joel Smith Steps Down as Head Coach Division II Men’s Lacrosse
After helping launch and lead the Virginia Tech Division II Men's Lacrosse program through its inaugural seasons, Joel Smith is officially stepping down as Head Coach due to relocation and scheduling challenges.
Coach Smith, who was instrumental in building the team from the ground up, leaves behind a legacy of dedication, growth, and CULTURE that has elevated the program’s trajectory in a short amount of time.
“This team and this program mean the world to me,” said Smith. “It’s been an incredible journey watching these young men grow—not just as players, but as teammates and leaders. While stepping away is tough, I know the program is in great hands and has a very bright future ahead.”
Virginia Tech Lacrosse Head Coach Panchito Ojeda expressed deep gratitude for Smith’s contributions:
“Joel has been the backbone of our Division II team. His leadership, humility, and work ethic laid the foundation for what this team is becoming. Simply put, Division II wouldn’t exist without him. We’re grateful for everything he’s done and thrilled he’ll remain part of our VT Lacrosse family in new ways moving forward.”
Virginia Tech Lacrosse thanks Coach Joel Smith for his service, leadership, and heart—and looks forward to the continued rise of its Division II team.
