Hokies Sweep Arizona With Win Over Sun Devils

Blacksburg, VA - The Virginia Tech Hokies completed the sweep of Arizona with a win 13-10 over the Arizona State Sun Devils on Monday afternoon.  This game shaped up to be a heated affair after ASU got a win over #2 Clemson 11-10 on Friday night and the Hokies beat the#10 Wildcats 16-10 on Saturday.  The game did not disappoint.

The Hokies opened the game with some solid defense in what looked like it might be a defensive game.  Both offenses thought differently in the first half as the Hokies opened the scoring going up 1-0.  ASU nabbed a pair of goals to go up 2-1, but the Hokies answered back twice to take the lead back 3-2.  After a goal by ASU, the Hokies closed the first quarter out with a goal to lead 4-3 after one.

The Second quarter was no different as the Hokies opened the scoring to go up 5-3.  ASU answered with two goals of their own 5-5 until the Hokies offense decided to grab three goals while the defense went into lockdown mode and the lead was 8-5.  The quarter ended with ASU grabbing two more and the Hokies one to go into the half 9-7.

The second half was much more defensive as both teams button down the hatches.  The Sun Devils won the third quarter 2-1 as they closed the gap to 10-9 to end the third.  The Hokies shut the door in the fourth as they scored 3 of the last four goals to take the game 13-10.

The Hokies were lead in net by Will Eckert (4S, 7GA) and Hunter LeClair (4S, 3GA) and at the dot by Danny Gaffney (2G, 20/35).  Offensively the Hokies were lead by Aidan Smith (5G, 2A) and Harlan Walters (2G).  Defensively they were lead by Zach Davis who also earned Burner of the Game for his play.

The Hokies return to the field on Wednesday March 23 against Buffalo.
