Hokies Squeak By Navy

by Panchito Ojeda

Blacksburg, VA - The Hokies opened their 2022 fall campaign with an 11-10 win over Navy Club.

The Midshipmen got on the field ready to play and raced out to a 4-1 lead.  A few face-off wins, some timely shooting, and key saves by their goalie were able to get the party started early.  However, the Hokies settled down and the defense gave up just 2 more goals for the final 20 minutes of the first half.  Meanwhile, the offense got grooving and scored 7 goals over that same twenty minute frame sending the Hokies to an 8-6 lead at half.

In the second half, the Hokies got on the board first and extended their lead to 10-7 where it remained for much of the game.  Late in the fourth the Midshipmen found twine and were able to close to 10-9 before the Hokies got one back to lead 11-9.  Navy was able to get one more at 10, but the defense held on the final possession.

"Navy was a formidable opponent" state Head Coach Panchito Ojeda.  "Playing a team with exceptional talent, excellent physical condition, and mental toughness challenged us early.  We got a good look at a lot of guys in this game.  Looking forward to building on where we have started."

Hokies were paced on Offense by Aidan Smith (3G, 1A), Jared Cole (3A), and Will Gianelli (3G).  Defensively, they were lead by net minder Will Eckert (6GA, 8 Saves).  The Hokies will faceoff against Liberty on October 29, 2022 to round out their fall.
