Hokies Run Past West Virginia

CHARLESTON, WVU - The Hokies traveled to Charleston, WV to play a game at the Shawnee Sports Complex where they came out victorious 19-6.

The Hokies opened the scoring with a goal from Grayson Barker ('23) on their first offensive possession.  Lead by Daniel Gaffney ('23) at the faceoff dot, the offense had plenty of chances but good goaltending by WVU goalie kept the score to 2-1 at the end of the first quarter.

Continuing their stalwart play in the second quarter, the defense held WVU to just 2 goals in the first half lead by Hunter LeClair ('22) in the goal with 4 saves.  While LeClair and the defense were holding down the fort, the offense continued to explode scoring 5 unanswered goals to take the lead to 7-1.  Halftime score was 7-2 Hokies.

Going into the third quarter the Hokies were shot out of a cannon.  Gaffney & Greenfield ('25) dominated the faceoff dot to allow the Hokies to jump out to an 11-2 lead with 10 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.  After a Mountaineer timeout the Hokies continued firing to take a 14-2 lead into the fourth quarter.

After a stellar third quarter freshman Andrew Wickman ('25) continued to be a brick wall with a couple of big saves.  The offense kept on going scoring 5 more goals in the fourth quarter stretching the lead to 18-3 before ending with a 19-6 final.

"The team came out and played tough" said Head Coach Panchito Ojeda.  "After just three practices I was impressed with our guys ability to execute, focus stepping off the bus, and energy to work as one team and compete.  We have a lot of work to do to get where we want but this is a good start.  I also would like to thank WVU for organizing this and giving us to a chance to play on this hallowed ground.  We are glad they are back on the field competing!"

The Hokies will faceoff at James Madison on October 2, 2021 in Harrisonburg.
