Hokies Roll in Opening Scrimmage

by Panchito Ojeda

Blacksburg, VA - Just four days into their season the Hokies battled Ferrum in an early season tune-up.  The unofficial score was 13-10 Hokies, but it was a great day for lacrosse for the team.

The Hokies got on the board first and jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the first quarter.  They continued to put their foot on the gas but the Ferrum goalie was up to the test coming up with some great saves to hold the Hokies to just 5 in the first quarter.  Defense was stout giving up just two for a 5-2 lead.

In the second quarter, the offense stalled, but the defense held strong giving up just two more goals.  Offense was able to sneak one in on Ferrum and lead 6-4 at halftime.  Going into the third quarter it looked like this would be a tightly contested game until the end.

However the Hokies had a different idea.  Lead at the dot by junior Matt White, the Hokies stung 6 in the third quarter while goalies goalies Hunter LeClair ('21) and Ned Schutt ('22) were tremendous between the pipes pitched a shutout in the 3rd.  Hokies rolled into the fourth quarter leading 12-4.

In the fourth quarter, Ferrum was able to mount a furious comeback but the Hokies answered with a finishing score of 13-10.

"This was a great chance for us to see every single player on this team compete." stated Head Coach Panchito Ojeda.  "With only four days of practice we wanted to see where guys were at and start finding roles for them for the rest of this spring.  Proud of the compete level of this team and looking forward to the rest of this season."

The Hokies return to the field on Saturday February 15 at 10am when they travel to play Roanoke College.  They will open their MCLA season the following Saturday at West Virginia.
