Division II Splits Road Trip
The Virginia Tech Men's Lacrosse Division II team delivered a weekend that showcased heart, resilience, and the true meaning of togetherness.
Double-Overtime Thriller in Jacksonville
On Saturday, the Hokies traveled to Jacksonville and battled Miami Hurricanes Men's Lacrosse in a back-and-forth contest that needed extra time — and then some.
In a game defined by grit and composure, Virginia Tech pulled out a dramatic one-goal victory in double overtime. With legs heavy and emotions high, it was Zach Flaherty who delivered the decisive moment, burying the game-winner to secure the road win and send the Hokies pouring off the sideline in celebration.
The contest was a test of stamina and mental toughness. Momentum swung throughout regulation and the first overtime period, but Tech refused to blink. Defensive stops, extra-effort ground balls, and timely possessions kept the Hokies within striking distance until Flaherty capitalized on his opportunity in the second overtime frame.
Head Coach Patrick Droney credited the win to the team’s resolve.
“Our guys worked extremely hard all week, and it showed when the game got tight,” Droney said. “In those tough moments, we stuck together. Nobody tried to do it alone. That’s what allowed us to snag that win — trust, effort, and a commitment to each other.”
Sunday Battle Falls Short
Less than 24 hours later, Virginia Tech faced North Florida Ospreys Men's Lacrosse. Despite strong stretches of play and competitive energy, the Hokies ultimately fell 13–9.
The quick turnaround tested both depth and recovery. Even so, the fight never wavered. The Hokies continued to push tempo, compete on both ends, and support one another throughout the contest.
The Division II Hokies returned home battle-tested, energized, and more connected than ever — carrying with them both the thrill of Saturday night’s celebration and the lessons learned from Sunday’s fight. They are on the road against East Carolina on Friday 2/27 at 7pm.
