Davis, GaffneyTo Dawn Honorary Numbers

by Panchito Ojeda

Blacksburg, VA - For the 2022 season Zach Davis will wear the #8 to honor former player Alex Hable and Daniel Gaffney to wear #9 in honor of Wian Coetzer.

Alex Hable, who passed away in 2014, was an inspiration to the team in his work ethic and the way in which he honored the game and his teammates.  Davis who hails from West Springfield high school is the embodiment of hard work and doing the little things.  He was chosen by his coaches & teammates to wear #8. "Zach is a menace on the field to other teams and an inspiration in our locker room everyday." state Head Coach Panchito Ojeda "He stands for everything that Alex stood for and his work, attitude, and energy make us better with each passing moment."  We asked Davis what wearing #8 means to him.

Playing as 8 means a lot to me. It's about playing for every other guy on the roster and appreciating our roles on the team.

Wian Coetzer, who passed away in 2019, was an incredible player and administrator.  He served as team President during the 2018 season while also finding a way to score 22 goals and dish out 14 helpers.  Gaffney, from Loudon, VA, was chosen by his coaches & teammates to wear #9 for his ability to perform on the field while being a great teammate off.  "Danny is a FOGO and studies & works at his craft much the way Wian was a no nonsense, hard worker." stated Head Coach Panchito Ojeda "Danny will wear Wian's number with pride and represent him well."  We asked Gaffney what wearing #9 means to him.

Having the honor of being selected to wear number 9 is a sign that what I do on and off the field is seen and respected by my teammates. It tells me that my teammates have faith and trust in me whenever they might need to.
