Virginia Tech Men’s Lacrosse Announces Hall of Fame Class Honoring Program Legends

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Virginia Tech Men’s Lacrosse is proud to announce this year’s Hall of Fame honorees, a group of individuals whose competitive excellence, leadership, and long-lasting impact have helped shape the identity and tradition of Hokie lacrosse. This class represents generations of players who elevated the standard of the program and left a legacy that continues to inspire current and future Hokies.

Don Tillar

One of the most decorated defenders in the history of the sport, Don Tillar carved out a remarkable lacrosse career defined by toughness, intelligence, and national prominence. A two-time First Team All-American, national champion, and recipient of the prestigious Schmeisser Award as the nation’s top defenseman, Tillar’s influence extends deeply into the Hokie program. Virginia Tech’s Rookie of the Year honor, named in his memory, reflects his enduring impact and his place among the program’s most revered figures.

Dick Dart

A true embodiment of grit and humility, Dick Dart served as a steady and selfless midfielder for the Hokies in the late 1970s. Known for doing the essential work that often goes unnoticed—clearing, riding, ground balls, and relentless hustle—Dart demonstrated what it means to be a great teammate. Following his passing from ALS, Virginia Tech created the Dick Dart Unsung Hero Award to honor his spirit. His Hall of Fame recognition cements him as a model of the Hokie work ethic.

Kevin Hayden

One of the most dynamic offensive players to ever wear the maroon and orange, Kevin Hayden established himself as a cornerstone of the Hokies’ attack. A team MVP and multi-year scoring leader, Hayden finished his career with 160 goals—placing him among the top all-time scorers in MCLA Division I history. His combination of size, skill, and competitive fire helped elevate Virginia Tech to national prominence and leaves a lasting mark on the program’s offensive tradition.

Dave Gruber

Recognized for his leadership, consistency, and deep commitment to the program, Dave Gruber holds a meaningful place in Hokie lacrosse history. Gruber’s ability to elevate the performance of those around him and his continued support of the program embody the spirit of the Hall of Fame. His contributions—on and off the field—represent the foundation on which Virginia Tech lacrosse continues to grow.

Jimmy Hayden

Jimmy Hayden enters the Hall of Fame as a standout competitor and culture-setter whose influence stretched far beyond the scoreboard. Known as a passionate teammate and relentless worker, Hayden played a vital role in raising the standard of accountability and togetherness within the program. His lasting impact reflects the core values of Virginia Tech lacrosse and the enduring strength of its brotherhood.

Dave Wolfel

A model of toughness and reliability, Dave Wolfel is recognized for his tireless work ethic and dedication to team success. Wolfel consistently delivered the effort and intensity that Virginia Tech lacrosse demands, helping establish a culture rooted in discipline and pride. His induction honors a career defined by doing whatever the team needed—no matter the challenge.

Bill Gavan

Known for his competitiveness and team-first mentality, Bill Gavan brought energy and professionalism to every aspect of the program. His versatility and leadership helped raise expectations for what it means to be a Hokie both on the field and in the locker room. Gavan’s legacy continues to influence generations of players who follow in his footsteps.
